    About the Kikuichi Brand

A 700 year old family tradition of unsurpassed craftsmanship, Kikuichi is the ONLY Japanese cutlery manufacturer with the true legacy of a Samurai swordsmith. For most of their long storied history, Kikuichi manufactured Samurai swords that bore the Emperor’s Chrysanthemum symbol (or “Kiku-no-mon”) as a mark of their excellence. Today, that same symbol appears on all of their knives. No one else in Japan is allowed the same privilege. When you purchase any Kikuichi knife, you will own a piece of history and unsurpassed craftsmanship like no other.

  • New Arrivals Thursday: Unique Gifts for that Special Wine Lover on Your List

The Proper Moose is pleased to introduce two new products guaranteed to dazzle the wine enthusiast on your holiday gift list: an elegant one-of-a kind corkscrew from the French village of Laguiole, handmade by the same craftsmen who produce our popular authentic Forge de Laguiole folding pocket knives; and a special line of soaps infused with a selection of popular wines whose high anti-oxidant properties and fragrant scents add an aromatic moisturizing boost for your morning wash.

    Forge de Laguiole Corkscrew (Sommelier)

forge_de_laguiole_juniper_handle_corkscrew_at_maisonlipariHighly prized by wine enthusiasts from around the world, Le Sommelier is quite possibly the most elegant corkscrew you will find anywhere. Its ergonomic design and functionality won it the coveted prize Design Plus award at the Ambiente International Trade Fair (1996) in Frankfurt, Germany. The uncompromising fit and finish make these “pieces of art,” to be cherished and handed down by wine lovers from generation to generation. Although a slightly different design from the folding pocket knife model, they have a distinctive Bee on the spine, a symbol of Laguiole, to ensure their authenticity. Beautifully packaged, Le Sommelier makes a wonderful gift for the holidays or other special occasions for that loved one who deserves only the best.

    Handmade Wine-Infused Soaps

For those interested in enjoying wine's properties other than its bouquet and taste, the Spindrift Soap Company brings you just the thing--soaps infused with a variety of popular New England wines.

Why wine? In a search for all natural ingredients to provide a healthy and moisturizing base for his handmade soaps, Spindrift Soap Company founder Colby Field discovered that the anti-oxidant quercetin found in grapes, along with flavanoids, nourishing minerals and vitamins, was just the thing. Released by the soap during use, these ingredients moisturize and soothe even the driest and most sensitive skin, and the wine's natural sugars also create a great lather. To top it off, the natural aromas of the four wines used in the Spindrift soaps in our exclusive collection--Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio--are a treat for the nose as well as the skin.

Packaged in a box of four 4.2 oz. bars, Spindrift wine soaps make great stocking stuffers for four loved ones, or to give as a set to the wine-loving enthusiast on your gift list.

  • Choosing the Right Tweezers: So Many Options!

If you've browsed through our tweezers selection lately (including our latest additions from Alpen), you may be overwhelmed by the many options you have for your tweezing needs. How to choose?

All of the tweezers sold by The Proper Moose are part of our collection because they meet our highest standards for quality, fit, and finish, and will stand up to the most important qualifications: the test of time and your specific uses. Here are some "tips" (pun intended!) to guide you through the selection process.

    Pointed Tip Tweezers

Pointed tweezers require a cautionary note. Unless you’re someone who is very comfortable with this type of tweezers, you probably shouldn’t use them. The tips on these tweezers are really sharp so they can isolate specific hairs, handle a single or very short hair, small or very fine hair, or even an ingrown one.

    Slanted Tip Tweezers

Slanted tweezers offer the best of all worlds: the precision of a pointed tweezers and the "search and pluck" advantages of a straight tweezers. This is the most versatile style: you get true precision as you reach for a specific hair or a splinter, and with a slight adjustment to the hand, can use the straight edge to capture stray hairs (e.g., around the chin area) or several hairs at once. Compared to a pointed tip, with a slant tip you get more speed with just a little less accuracy.

    Combination Slant/Point Tip Tweezers

This is your ideal splinter tweezers. It’s not as pointed at the end as the pointed tweezers, but it is sharp enough to open the skin, and the flat edge lets you grab the splinter and remove it.

You'll want to consider not only the tip of your tweezers, but you also the grip or feel (e.g., for those with arthritis). For example, the handle of one pair of tweezers we offer has perforations, while another pair has a ball at the end to prevent your grip from slipping. Both of these features will provide a more secure, precise control of this grooming implement.

When choosing an implement of this type, typical tweezers sold in drugstores are not up to the task and will definitely not give you the quality and precision that one would expect for such a personal grooming task. You can have confidence that when you purchase a pair of tweezers from The Proper Moose, you are always buying the best quality at a reasonable price, for years of satisfaction.

  • Safety Razors... for Women!

I recently purchased a men's Merkur 180 Classic Style Double Edge Safety Razor from The Proper Moose... but... I'm not a man. Was it a gift for a father, a friend? Nope! Why purchase a razor that is promoted singularly as a razor for men's beards and whiskers?

I was curious - how would this razor shape up against the multitude of women's razors available in every pharmacy and grocery aisle across the country? The answer: extremely, extraordinarily well.

Here are the top 4 reasons that women should switch from their usual brand of throw-away razor to a Safety Razor like mine:

    #1 Smooth Shave

    Smooth Shave with Safety Razor

The most important reason to ever choose a product: because it works the best. I was very pleased with the precise, clean shave of the safety razor. First, get past your squeamishness about that sharp blade. Yes, I was overly cautious when I first removed the razor from the package and securely fastened it into my safety razor. But once the blade was in place, I could tell that it was indeed "safe" and secure, and just the same as any plastic Bic blade - except protected by metal, even better!

Apply shaving cream to legs and shave - again, I was cautious at first, but soon found myself shaving normally. The sharp blade is great for quickly removing hair, and the double-sided feature meant I could less frequently clean off the razor as I shaved. And strangely - I didn't expect this - the cool metal felt great against my skin - pretty soothing, honestly! After I rinsed & dried, I inspected my leg to find a nice, smooth shave.

    #2 Cost

That nice, smooth shave continued... and continued... I didn't have to replace the blade for a month! 10 packs of these blades are $8.75 at The Proper Moose website, so let's do a little math. The Merkur 180 Classic Style Double Edge Safety Razor is $36.95 - the initial Big Bad cost of this switchover. Plus $8.75 for razor blades, and I was out $45.70 on this safety razor challenge. However, that is for TEN MONTHS.

My old favorite was the Schick Intuition Razor - one of those razors that comes with Shave Gel. Each Razor is approximately $12.99 (fine) but where, they get you is the cartridges, which are $23.99 for 6, about $4 each. Also, because the razors are reliant on the shaving cream cartridges, you use them much more quickly. I went through about 2 x month, so over the course of ten months = $80!

    The Math:

    • Safety Razor, razor blades, general shaving cream = approx. $60 for ten months
    • Schick Intuition razor and cartridges = approx. $92.99

Fairly comparable, not a big change. But check out the next ten months:

    • Just razor blades, general shaving cream = $28.75
    • Just Schick cartridges = another $80

Lifetime savings on shaving with a Safety Razor are big! Now if I saved that money... all the things I could do...

    #3 Environment

If you're a human being on this Earth - whether you're super eco-friendly or don't pay that much attention - you KNOW that creating less waste is a good thing. Nottossing out a hundred plastic razors, cartridges, and especially the big plastic razors feels very good indeed.

    #4 Ease

Less shopping, less stops at the pharmacy, less running out to the store on the morning of Beach Day. You can order the replacement blades from the Proper Moose and they'll take up very little room in your bathroom cupboard, and last so long that replacement is rare and never a rush. The only thing you'll need to replace is your shaving cream, but that's rather nice, because you can try different brands for different moods & seasons. My current favorite is EOS Vanilla Bliss Shave Cream - highly recommended! Although the next one I want to try is Castle Forbes Lime Shaving Cream.

If my 4 reasons don't convince you, you'll just have to try a safety razor for yourself! Don't let the big plastic razor companies pull you in with all those pretty colors, a simple Safety Razor is the best, cheapest, most environmentally friendly, convenient solution for shaving a woman's legs!

  • Santoku: The Replacement for All Kitchen Knives?

Santoku knives are increasingly popular - often featured in cutlery stores and online cutlery marketplaces.  But what makes the Santoku knife stand out? And should I be using it for all of my kitchen tasks?

Although not all Santoku knives are made in Japan, the design is inspired by Japanese cutlery. (Santoku means having 3 “values” or purposes: chopping, dicing and mincing). The knife is a cross between a cleaver and a short chef's knife, a versatile size for many cutting tasks.

Santoku knives are popular kitchen knives for several reasons:

Size - With a straighter edge and shorter than a traditional chef's knife (typically either a 5” or 7” blade with a blunted sheepsfoot-tip and a thinner spine), these knives are often perceived to be easier to hold and thus better to control. Although not necessarily true, they are still very useful for efficient chopping, dicing, and mincing. In addition, a true Japanese Santoku knife is perfectly balanced and generally lighter and thinner than Western-style versions, often using superior blade materials to provide a blade with exceptional qualities of hardness along with a thinner, sharper cutting edge.

Non-stick Quality - Most (but not all) Santoku knives feature dimples (scallop cut-outs) on each side of the blade above the edge in order to add “air” to the cutting surface, which in turn reduces resistance as the blade cuts through thick or starchy foods. ONLY if these dimples go right to the blade’s cutting edge could this feature be referred to as a Granton Edge. This is important because many knife manufacturers say their product has a Granton Edge when in fact they do not. A true Granton Edge has the dimples (scallop cut-outs) applied right to the cutting edge to give you both the keeness of a hollow ground razor coupled with the strength of an ordinary knife. The dimples make the blade sharper AND reduce drag when cutting food. While there is some truth to the fact that these dimples give the blade a non-stick quality, the real intent of the design was to allow for a much thinner cutting edge without reducing the integrity and rigidity of the blade (important to note: the blade can still be sharpened with any quality sharpening steel).

Multiple Abilities - the length and size of a sharp Santoku blade allow you many options - you can dice, chop, mince, cut, slice... making it a go-to for home food preparation (on the Rachael Ray Show this style of knife is often referred to as her favorite go-to knife for general use in the home kitchen).

So will Santoku Knives replace all of the other knives in my kitchen?

No, not quite - despite its versatility and ease of use, the Santoku knife cannot chop as efficiently as the common 8” chef’s knife, cannot serrate like a bread knife, nor can it be used for flexible tasks like boning a chicken or cleaning a fish. It also cannot be used for peeling or paring, because of the thickness and depth of the blade.

kkwga17065spHowever, the Santoku can be added to your essential kitchen knives.  Even if you love your chef's knife, you will end up grabbing your Santoku for more tasks than you expect! So choose a sharp, excellent quality, long-lasting Santoku knife.  Some of our favorites include the Japanese-made Kikuichi 6.5" Warikomi Elite Gold Santoku Knife, with its ergonomic handle, and the Kikuichi Ice Hardened 6.5" Santoku, with Western-style handle and Ice Hardened Molybdenum blade - both admired by professional chefs for craftsmanship and design.

  • Why use Magnetic Knife Racks?

walnut-edge_1You've been seeing those Magnetic Knife Racks everywhere, and you're thinking -  "Why should I use a magnetic knife rack, when I can use the wooden block that I've had forever?" Well, there are a number of good reasons.Let's take a look at how Magnetic Knife Racks stack up against keeping your cutlery in a wooden block, knife sleeves, or in a drawer.

Hygenic - A magnetic knife rack is far more sanitary than a porous wood block. Bacteria and germs also abound in a kitchen drawer filled with all sorts of cutlery and utensils.

Safety - Unlike kitchen drawers, wall-mounted knife racks keep cutlery out of the reach of children. They also keep adults from pricking their fingers when reaching into a jumble of cutlery in a drawer.

Beautiful - Knife Racks display your cutlery in an aesthetically pleasing way, especially for those who proudly keep a nice knife collection.

Stay Sharp - Magnetic Knife Racks can help protect against the dulling of your blades.  Knives stored loosely in drawers rub against each other and other drawer companions, dulling the blades and possibly damaging both the blades and the handles.

Stay Clean - Knife sleeves are a pain - you need the correct ones for the right knives, and you need to not only clean your knives but clean the sleeves as well! Magentic Knife Racks afford a one-time clean - of your knife only.

knife-1Creativity - Sure, they're called "Magnetic Knife Racks", but why not use them creatively? Use them to store your other kitchen tools, such as pie servers, pizza cutters, and spatulas, making them easy to grab while you're cooking away!

The Proper Moose has created their own unique Magnetic Knife Racks - gorgeous for the kitchen and useful for knife storage and cooking.  Browse our new selection!

  • Traditional Wet Shaving vs. Disposable Razors

You may have heard this argument - which is less expensive: traditional wet shaving razors, or many packets of disposable razors over the course of a year?  And which is more beneficial, for skin health and a clean shave?

This interesting article examines the monetary value of wet shaving, but perhaps more importantly, in the second half, looks at which product works - and feels - better for men's shaving.
